We Can Swim But We Don’t Always Learn!| 5 Common Reasons People Fail Before Trying Water Safety Classes

In order to ensure the health of our fellow human beings, being in danger can test our limits. Sometimes trying to stay afloat for long periods of time can prove too much of a challenge. Here are five common reasons people fail before diving into water safety training classes.

It’s hard to follow instructions – Many people struggle with remembering to wear their personal flotation devices, which puts us at risk for drowning without knowing it. It’s impossible to concentrate while wearing something so heavy and bulky. Our bodies will never get used to such large objects. They often require extensive equipment and we may find ourselves struggling to fit it all in. Often times the instructors will tell us it’s okay to put a towel over our heads to float for longer periods of time. Doing this can also allow more oxygen into our lungs while underwater.

A good sign that the instructor got something right, is when we tell him or her that he or she forgot something important like the flotation device. Sometimes this happens because we made a mistake by asking the instructor to remind us. Making mistakes is inevitable as they are happening to everybody at sea. Being honest and open up about it allows us to avoid making similar mistakes in the future.

We forgot how to float – Sometimes we don’t see a lot of water in between our feet. This can be difficult to tell as we may not feel the same level of floatation that others do. Luckily, we can notice a difference. By doing small exercises and activities like taking a bath or moving around in the pool, we can check to make sure we’re feeling comfortable and safe. We should always try to be aware of any discomfort in our body as this can be signs of imminent danger.

Sometimes there’s trouble breathing underwater – Sometimes there can be difficulty breathing underwater. Since some life jackets don’t come with filters we may need to purchase another brand of filter. Then again depending on which type of vessel you are planning on entering we may need extra equipment. Having trouble breathing can cause rapid heart rate and low blood pressure, which can make it harder to fight your way back to shore. These symptoms can lead to confusion and mental collapse, making it harder to escape. Knowing how to breathe underwater is essential as many accidents occur because of this.
